AFRICA on safari
Welcome to Chikwenya on the Zambezi. Al fresco G&Ts ...
African route
With great friend and legendary aviation writer, Jim Davis, at Johannesburg.
The Gin Trap Bar, Mashatu Game Lodge
Families of warthog spent a fair bit of time around our airstrips once we got out bush.
Family of spotted hyenas - we wanted to bring the little cubs home.
Typical game drive, Mashatu, Limpopo Valley, Botswana
African Aero Safaris produced an exceptionally well organised itinerary for us.
In Africa, it's all about the teeth. One of our happy smiling game guides at Mashatu.
Sundowners, the best institution since the dawn of the colonies.
Peak hour on Giraffe Hill
Peak Hour on Ellie Flats
I'm coming, Mum, I'm coming
We don't argue with her right-of-way rules.
Lioness on a mission
Lucky that Judith doesn't suffer from Lens Envy ...
A relaxed nap for the family
Little friend outside our cabin at Mashatu
Amazing - the South African boys are actually spotted consulting a MAP.
And my goodness, was it what.
Inside our tent at Mashatu.
Have gun, will impress tourists.
Our home at the Tented Camp of Mashatu, in Botswana's Limpopo Valley.
Aah, Rossy so loves being married to a photo-journalist ! Typical African outdoor shower.
Dont' get up on our account.
The beautiful African Ellie.
Gentle until threatened, this giant of the veld, the White Rhino remains the target of poachers even today.
Another Bucket List day as we fly low level along the Zambezi River, scouting for game below and dodging vultures up here.
Whole fleet arrives at Chikwenya Safari Park, Zimbabwe
The Down Under fleet. Garth flew the Cirrus (left), mine was the Cessna 182 KDT in the middle, and Pete M. flew JOT, the other 182.
Captain Merwood does his paperwork before downing tools for the day.
Kitfox pilot, Kobus, with our tour leader, Dave Vanderspuy of African Aero Safaris (right).
Settling into typical accommodation like our beautiful room at Chikwenya was like heaven after often long and adventure-filled days.
Take three steps out of bed and you're leaning over the Zambezi.
The breakfast room at Chikwenya, Zimbabwe
Can't stop taking photos of Chikwenya.
ATC Tower and bougainvillea-laden terminal at Kariba airport, Zimbabwe. Customs & immigration, here we go again
James' Citabria waits patiently at Kariba for everyone else to fuel up. That is a spare control tower.
A typical scene - Peter V haggling over cash with an airport refueler. Eight little aircraft arriving at once usually woke this lot up.
Inbound calls by the 8 of us plus local traffic made for chaos at Kasane airport, Botswana. That's another controller who's still in therapy.
They assume they're doing Africa in style.
Some of our crew enjoying down time on the water at Chobe National Park, Botswana.
Four of our team, including Judith and Dennis (front) from Quirindi in rural NSW, queuing for passport duties going from Botswana into Zimbabwe.
African taxi
Try some of this, Jumbo, it's like chocolate, only disgusting.
There were some special moments to cherish.
Riding high on the ellie's back, the gorgeous Peter Vanderspuy, expert in all things with leaves, wings, paws, trunks and big teeth.
An African queue
Where do they put all those trees?
Gettin jiggy with me, African style.
Sydney pilot, Lynne Lascelles falls in love all over again.
A heli flight over Vic Falls is worth the dollars
Vic Falls
Vic Falls
Vic Falls heli pad - not hard to spot where the falls are.
What's not to love about this place?
Whole crew - African Aero Safari - final night, Grundy's Lodge, Botswana.
At Welli West in Botswana, with my lovely old C182, that I grew to love over the 12 day safari.
The Australian & Kiwi contingent gather for Sundowners at Shibula, Botswana
The two C182s we hired, safely delivered back at home base of Lanseria. Thank you Africa - we'll be back !!
