Agnes Water

It's time for a chill ...

You're going to love Agnes. I know I bang on a lot about great places I find, but honestly, I don't pass them on here unless I think you'll love them too. Here's a cracker of a find on Queensland's central coast.

I recommend you and your pax get totally exhausted by the time you tie down at Agnes Water (YAWT), so there's no argument about needing to stay at least a week to recover from the traumas of .... oh whatever ... just make up some traumas.

Agnes Water beach - tropical vibe, and too far south for crocs!

As with arrivals at any unfamiliar ALA around Australia, give the operator a call beforehand to check conditions and any local procedures. At the time of publishing, John Gowans is the contact, details on OzRunways.

The 950m grass strip presents a line of trees along the entire western edge of the strip, so care in windy conditions during landing is advised. We refuelled at Gladstone on the way past.

Watch for roos on the Agnes Water strip. Plenty of parking.

Queensland does sleepy little coastal towns very well, but it's produced a gem of a fly-in destination with this one. Agnes Water isn't on the tourist highway yet, and isn't that a good thing.  It's laid back. So chilled.

Sandcastles 1770 3-bedroom beach house. Bargain!

If you stay where we always do at Sandcastles 1770 Motel Resort, the beach is about 25 steps from your front door. But there are plenty of other options. We kept inventing reasons to stay another night.

We were a group of 6 when we called in, on our way back from a 2-week Queensland safari, revisiting some legendary favourites of mine like Shandonvale Station, Mt Mulligan Lodge and Winton. So we felt like trying a new place, and Agnes top-scored.

Sunset drinks at 1770 marina.

When we'd finished scoffing local seafood, supervising the sunset at the marina at nearby 1770, we hired bikes, found great bush walks, uncovered an awesome massage lady!, cooked on the home BBQ and went for multiple swims at the beach every day. Just go.

Job done - all six of us totally chilled after 3 nights at Agnes.
